is organized a seminar entitled `Beyond the Printed Page, Content for a
Digital Age: A Journey from Johannes Gutenberg Printing to Project
Gutenberg' on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the Goethe Institut
Pakistan, Karachi
Gutenberg's printing press was the great revolution in the modern history. Johannes Gutenberg was a German goldsmith, printer and publisher who introduced modern book printing. His invention of mechanical movable type printing started the Printing Revolution. It played key role in the development of the Renaissance, Reformation and Scientific Revolution and laid the material basis for the modern knowledge-based economy and the spread of learning to the masses. The seminar encapsulates the journey of printing from the invention of movable type printing to electronic publishing and e-media.
The Seminar begins with an introduction from Ms. Anila Iqbal Ahmed, Librarian: Goethe-Institut Pakistan. Dr. Markus Litz, Director: Goethe-Institut Pakistan, welcome the participants of the seminar and praised the efforts of Pakistan Library Club for arranging the event. Dr. Litz presented a detailed view of the post printing era and innovation of mechanical movable type printing by Johannes Gutenberg. He also highlighted the commendable role of printing in the human history and its contribution in the scientific revolution.
Salman Abid, Assistant Librarian: State Bank of Pakistan made a presentation covering the invention of early writing system and the evolution of writing material in different period. He highlighted the intricacies of the hand written manuscripts and their restricted access to the wealthy educational and religious institutions or the super-rich. He also put emphasis on its impact on the society and the re-birth of the human civilization – the renaissance which led to scientific and political revolution in Europe. He also underlines the impact of information revolution since the advent of the digital age and free access electronic dissemination of information.
Sameem Kardar, Secretary: Pakistan Library Club read messages of Alastair Cook, Regional Manager/Vice President (Middle East, Maghreb & Turkey) Emerald Group Publishing Ltd and B.P Prakash, President SLA Asian Chapter and their good wishes for a successful event.
Ameena Saiyid, Managing Director: Oxford University Press was the key note speaker at the occasion. Being part of the printing feternity she highlighted the role of printed books and the printing revolution after the invention of movable type printing. Referring to a research findings on sharp decline in public libraries she stresses the role of government in promoting reading culture across Pakistan. Talking about the decline in reading habits of Pakistani nation she said `we spending a lot of money on eating and clothing but didn't buy a book'. In her closing remarks she admired the efforts of Pakistan Library Club in promoting library culture in Pakistan and offered her fullest cooperation.
Prof. Malahat Kaleem Sherwani, Chairperson-Department of Library and Information Science, University of Karachi was the second speaker of the seminar but she did not attend the event because of her ill health.
Arshad Mahmood, Director- Pakistan Library Club in his closing remarks thanked the management of Goethe-Institut Pakistan and the guest speaker for providing their precious time for this event. He also thanked the participants of the seminar for attending the seminar. A souvenir was presented to the guest speaker followed by refreshments.

"Two Days National Workshop on “Synthesizing of Library Systems and Operation” on 25th-26th July 2011 in collaboration of Pakistan Librarians Welfare Organization and Department of Library and Information Science, University of Karachi.
Two days National Workshop on Synthesizing of Library Systems and Operations was successfully organized by Pakistan Library Club on 25th-26th July 2011, in collaboration with Pakistan Librarians Welfare Organization and Department of Library and Information Science, University of Karachi.
The resource persons include Dr. Muhammad Ramzan, Mr. Muhammad Asif Munir and Mr. Nadeem Siddique from the Lahore University of Management Sciences, Lahore. The workshop was designed to give participants a clear understanding of available open source library softwares like Koha, Library World, Dspace, etc. During the workshop participants were given step by step hands-on training regarding selection/ implementation of open source software and how to create their own digital library. Twenty Four participants from various institutions attended the two days workshop.
In his opening speech, Mr. Arshad Mahmood (Director-PLC) welcomes the speakers and participants of the workshop and gives an overview of the course contents. Dr. Muhammad Ramzan (Director-LUMS Library) appreciated the role of Pakistan Library Club and other organizers for scheduling such workshop. He also highlighted the importance of automation and digitization of library collections. Prof. Malahat K. Sherwani (Chairperson, Department of Library & Information Science, University of Karachi) in her opening remarks welcome Dr. Muhammad Ramzan and his team for sparing their time and knowledge sharing. Mr. Muhammad Asif Munir presented an introduction of the Pakistan Librarians Welfare Organization. Prof. Muneera Nasreen Ansari of the Department of Library & Information Science, University of Karachi shared her views regarding the course contents and importance of this workshop. The workshop was split into four training sessions in order to provide extensive look on each software and Q&A sessions. During the workshop refreshments and lunch were also served to the participants.
At the concluding session, Mr. Arshad Mahmood (Director-PLC) thanked the speakers, organizers and the participants of the workshop for making the event successful. In his concluding remarks, Dr. Ramzan summarizes the key points of the workshop and stress upon the participants to implement the things being discussed during the two days workshop. He also appreciated the role of Pakistan Library Club and Department of Library & Information Science, University of Karachi. Prof. Malahat K. Sherwani; the Chairperson of Department of Library & Information Science, University of Karachi; being the co-host of the workshop thanked the speakers and participants of the workshop.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor of University of Karachi Prof. Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi was the Chief Guest on the occasion. She highlighted the role of academicians in bringing positive change in the society. Certificates were distributed amongst the course participants and special memorabilia were presented to the resource persons.

Arshad Mahmood, Director Pakistan Library Club on the occasion highlighted the importance of World Book & Copyright Day and efforts that Biztek is making for the positive contribution in the society and academic circles. Moreover, he explained the aims and objectives of Pakistan Library Club. Arshad Mahmood also announced winners of Power Point Competition.

A Workshop"Networking and Negotiation Skills for Information Professionals" on 24th of June 2010, organized by Pakistan Library Club (Islamabad Chapter)
Pakistan Library Club (Islamabad Chapter) organized a one day workshop on “Networking and Negotiation Skills for Information Professionals” on 24th of June 2010. Venue was Helen Keller Centre, National Library and Resource Centre F-7 Markaz Islamabad.
Mr. Shafiq Rana, President Pakistan Library Club (Islamabad Chapter) shared the objectives of the club with participants.
It was a joint venture of Pakistan Library Club (Islamabad Chapter) with Embassy of the United States of America Information, Research and Communication Centre, the purpose of workshop was to boost participant’s networking and negotiation skills ability to create positive personal outlook. LIS professionals from different departments and organizations participated in the workshop.
The resource person, Ms Afshan Amir, Director, Information, Research and Communication (IRC), and Mr. Umar Farooq, Reference Specialist, Information, Research and Communication (IRC), from Embassy of United States of America with the help of multimedia presentations and mutual discussion, explained the contents in detail with reference to library and information services.
There were 50+ participants from different institutions like NLP, LOC, NUST and Ministries etc attended this valuable workshop. At the end of the workshop, Certificates were awarded to the participants of the workshop.

Meeting of LIS Professionals on "Need for Establishment of National Node of GSDL in Pakistan"
A meeting of LIS Professionals was organized in collaboration with State Bank of Pakistan Library, Pakistan Library Club (HQ) and LISolutions on Thursday June 10, 2010 at the Learning Resource Center; State Bank of Pakistan Karachi. The meeting commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Mr. Atta ur Rehman. Mr. Arshad Mahmood presented a brief introduction and thanked the participant. Mr. Rana Muhammad Shafique gave a comprehensive presentation on Greenstone and its adaptability in Pakistani environment. Mr. Shafiq discuss about libraries, which are successfully managing their digital contents on Greenstone e.g. UNESCO library, Akhtar Hameed Khan Institute etc. He also highlighted the importance of open source software and their flexibility to modify according to local needs.
Next presentation is of Mr. Atta ur Rehman, who also presented an insight on Greenstone and its Urdu customization. Mr. Ata raises various questions why Greenstone is important for Pakistani Libraries. He also highlighted the importance of Open Source Softwares and the concept of shared knowledge. Mr. Ata ur Rehman invited the participants to build their collections on Greenstone Digital Library.
